In this article, we will learn how to configure and use the Linear integration as a defect management tool in TestCollab. This allows testers to report issues in Linear directly when a test case fails during execution. It also ensures smooth collaboration between QA and development teams without the need to switch between tools.
How Linear Integration Helps?
Once the integration is setup, you can:
Create Linear issues directly from failed test cases
Link existing Linear issues to test executions
View linked issue details within TestCollab
Other users can link their Linear accounts to set themselves as the reporter.
Prerequisites
Before configuring the integration, ensure that:
You have an active Linear account
You have access to the appropriate Linear Team and Project
You are a Project Administrator in TestCollab
Step 1: Enable Linear as Defect Manager
Go to project where you want to use the integration
Navigate to Settings > Defects page
Select Linear from the list of available defects managers
Click Signin to Linear.
Step 2: Authorize Linear
You will be redirected to Linear for authorization.
Sign in to your Linear account if prompted
Review the requested permissions
Click Authorize to allow TestCollab access.
After authorization, you will be redirected back to TestCollab.
Step 3: Configure Linear Settings
Once connected:
Select the appropriate Workspace and Team
Choose the Project where defects should be created
Map Linear fields (optional), you can also set if these fields should be shown on report defect page
Save the configuration.
Proper field mapping ensures that defect details are transferred accurately at the time of issue creation.
Advanced Settings
While running test case, if a defect is pushed as a result of a failure, by default all the steps of the test case are included in the reported defect's description. If you want to include only the executed steps then you can enable "Push executed steps only"
Creating a Linear Issue from a Test Case
After integration is active:
Start executing a test case within a test plan
If a test step fails, click Fail & Report Bug icon
Check the required details like title and description
Other fields, if selected during configuration will also be shown and their values can be set
Click Create Defect.
A new issue will be created in Linear and automatically linked to the failed test case.
The newly added issue in Linear workspace.
You can also link an existing Linear issue instead of creating a new one.
Connecting other user's Linear accounts
Other users in your team can also link their Linear account to become a reporter for tasks pushed at the time of test case failure.
Conclusion
The Linear defect management integration simplifies the process of reporting and tracking bugs directly from your test execution workflow. By connecting TestCollab with Linear, teams can improve collaboration, reduce context switching, and maintain end-to-end traceability between QA and development.
